Sony has allegedly begun placing warning labels on PlayStation 5 boxes to inform buyers of its plan to stop producing physical disc games.
The report stems from an image shared on X by content creator Behind the Games, which shows a sticker on a PS5 box indicating that physical disc production will cease in January 2028.
According to the sticker, the warning reads:
“IMPORTANT NOTICE: From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.”
While the image has not yet been independently verified—and it remains unclear if the label applies to all PS5 models—it comes shortly after Sony addressed growing player backlash regarding its shift toward an all-digital future.
During a recent earnings Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledged the strong community reaction, stating that the company intends to “cautiously move forward” while figuring out how to keep gamers engaged in a purely digital ecosystem.
“We understand that the community has put forward those views to us,” Tao said, noting that video games hold deep sentimental value for many players. “We want to consider that, and in the future digital ecosystem, ‘how do we engage the gamers’ is something that we would like to continue to explore.”
Sony also mentioned that it is currently in discussions with major retailers regarding the transition, suggesting that stores in the U.S. may eventually shift to selling physical boxes containing digital game codes instead of traditional discs.
