European Union Approves $55B Acquisition of Electronic Arts by PIF-Led Consortium
The proposed acquisition of Electronic Arts (EA) by an investor group led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has cleared a massive regulatory hurdle. On July 23, the European Commission officially approved the merger, concluding that the deal raises no competition concerns within the EU.
While expected, the regulatory blessing moves the historic $55 billion deal—which also includes private equity giant Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners—one step closer to completion.
Debt Concerns and Fearing the Fallout
Structured as a leveraged buyout (LBO), the acquisition saddles EA with billions of dollars in new debt. Industry analysts and insiders widely expect the publisher to embark on aggressive cost-cutting measures to manage those financial obligations. Concerns are mounting across EA's studios over potential:
-
Mass layoffs
-
Studio closures
-
Game cancellations
While formal structural changes aren't expected to be announced until the transaction officially closes, anxiety is already running high among EA’s developers.
BioWare Devs Brace for Potential Cuts
BioWare—the renowned studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect—is reportedly viewed internally as particularly vulnerable.
According to a report from Insider Gaming, several anonymous employees expressed fear that BioWare could be among the first targets for restructuring. One current developer revealed they have been actively updating their portfolio and searching for outside roles, describing potential cuts as a "matter of time."
"I’ve been doing it since last year, but I’m making sure I have a portfolio ready and feelers out for other jobs... Kind of feels like a matter of time."

Culture, Content, and New Ownership
Beyond financial strain, BioWare's long-standing reputation for inclusive storytelling and LGBTQ+ representation has sparked concerns about creative friction with the studio's prospective owners.
Former veteran BioWare writer Patrick Weekes, who departed the studio in 2025, publicly speculated that the PIF-led group might seek to distance EA from progressive political or social themes. Weekes suggested EA’s new owners could potentially shutter or offload BioWare entirely to avoid political misalignment.
EA previously acknowledged the inherent risks associated with a sale of this magnitude in 2025, but the publisher continues to push forward toward finalizing the deal.
